Lemon groves, cliffside villages and blue water. Here is how to see it well.
The Amalfi Coast is one of the most beautiful places on earth, and one of the easiest to get wrong. Choose the wrong base and you spend your holiday in traffic. Choose the wrong hotel and you climb three hundred steps to reach your room.
I'm Jen Donati, founder of Time & Tide Travel. My family name comes from Florence, I lived in Europe for many years, and I have years of experience planning Amalfi Coast journeys for travelers who want the trip of a lifetime to feel effortless. This guide shares how I think about the coast. The rest, the right hotel, the right room and the people who make it all run smoothly, is what I do for my clients.
The single most important decision is where you stay. Each town has its own rhythm, and the right one depends on how you like to travel.

Positano. The postcard. Pastel houses stacked down the cliff, chic boutiques and a beach scene that buzzes into the evening. Perfect for couples who want energy and style. Be ready for stairs; Positano is built vertically.

Amalfi and Conca dei Marini. Amalfi is a real working town with a cathedral, a harbor and ferries in every direction, which makes it a practical base. The quieter cliffs nearby offer some of the coast’s most serene resort stays.

Ravello. High above the sea, with gardens, music and the most romantic views on the coast. Ideal for a slower, more cultured stay. You trade easy beach access for peace.
Praiano and Furore. Between Positano and Amalfi, with spectacular sunsets and a calmer pace. Best for travelers happy to spend their days at a beautiful hotel.
Sorrento. Technically not on the Amalfi Coast, but a superb base for first-time visitors and families. Flatter, well connected by sea to Capri, Naples and Positano, and an easy reach of Pompeii.

Capri and Ischia. Capri is glamour, shopping and dramatic rock formations; stay overnight to see it after the day-trippers leave. Ischia is larger and gentler, known for thermal spas and gardens, and rewards a longer, slower stay.

Naples. Italy’s most underrated city, with world-class archaeology, history and the best pizza on earth. Two nights here makes a wonderful start or finish.

“The details are where a good trip becomes a great one.”
Not sure which town fits you? This is exactly the conversation I love to have.

When to go. May, June, September and early October are the sweet spot: warm sea, long evenings and fewer crowds than high summer. July and August are glorious but busy and hot, and the best tables and boats are reserved months ahead. Most of the finest hotels close from late October or early November and reopen in March or April, so late-season trips need careful timing.

Getting there. Most travelers fly into Naples, about an hour to an hour and a half by car from Sorrento, Positano or Amalfi. Seasonal nonstop flights from the US to Naples run from late spring to autumn. Salerno’s growing airport sits closer to Amalfi and Ravello and is increasingly popular with private aviation. Arriving from Rome? A fast train to Naples and a private driver beats four hours on the road.

A few things I tell every client.
Count the steps, not the stars. Two hotels at the same price can mean a lift to your door or 130 steps from the road. I ask hotels for the exact route to your room.
The road has rules. The coast road restricts traffic at peak times, and parking is scarce. A trusted private driver is worth every euro.
The sea decides. Ferries and boat days depend on the weather. I never schedule an island crossing right before a flight home.
Beach clubs are booked separately. A lunch reservation does not guarantee a sunbed, and the most coveted spots sell out early.
Allergies and celiac needs can be handled beautifully in Italy, with the right restaurants and the right instructions sent ahead. I take care of that before you arrive.
Stay on an island overnight. Capri at 7 pm, after the day boats leave, is a different place.
